SEO management is all about position your website and its content for success when ranking for authority against your competitors. One powerful tool in that effort is the webpage title tag. Title tags are elements of the website’s structure Google looks for when indexing to get clues into the subject matter of the page content.

When you publish a webpage without actually publishing content in the metadata called “Title tag,” search engines simply pick up the titles from your webpage’s content and publish those in the index. The same thing happens with the meta description. If you don’t expressly write content in your website’s HTML metatag for the page description, Google will pull content from the page itself and publish that as the description in the index.

The problem with that is your page title and description are strategic resources that help you rank correctly for your site’s industry and the page’s content. So you really want to be deliberate about what’s published as your page title and description in the search index.

For that reason, you need to steer clear of these four troublesome ways people often hurt their own chances of ranking highly when utilizing the title tag:

  1. Not Using Your Content Keyword: Title tags tell Google what your page is all about, right? So why wouldn’t you use the keyword you’re looking to rank for in your title tag. So long as the content on the page itself focuses on that keyword, why wouldn’t you use it in one of most powerful keyword tools you have at your disposal? Always include a logical use of the keyword that summarizes your page’s content focus in your title tag. It’s essential SEO strategy.
  2. Using Too Many Keywords: Too many keywords is a no-no, for your page content and for your title tags. Too many keywords, or too many instances of a single keyword is essentially spam. And if you don’t already know, spam is a major SEO no-no. Using too many keywords (different keywords or the same keyword) is a big red flag Google algorithms look for when determining manipulation. Don’t stuff keywords in the title tag. It’s more trouble than its worth. Just don’t do it.
  3. Using the Wrong Keyword: Using keywords that don’t relate to the actual content on the page just to rank the page for a given search term is another form of spam. And as stated above, spam is a major SEO no-no. It’s manipulative. It tells Google that the page is about something it is not. If you want the page to rank about a given topic, the solution is simple. Write about that topic and include the keyword in the copy.
  4. Ignoring the Title Tag Altogether: Neglecting to place strategic content in your webpage’s title tag is missing an opportunity to rank the page for the keyword(s) it was intended. Again, search engines will pull title and description content from the page itself if you don’t use these powerful tools. Don’t miss an opportunity to be deliberate about your SEO strategy and resources.
